Transcribe a Yiddish shiur or meeting
Upload the recording and get the whole thing as Yiddish text — to read over, search, share, or edit into a written version.
אפלאודט א שיעור, א מיטינג אדער א וואויס-נאוט, און באקומט עס געשריבן אויף אידיש. א לאנגע רעקארדינג? שיקט א לינק אין אימעיל.
How to do it
- Open speech to textGo to speech to text and pick the language of the recording: אידיש, עברית or English.
- Upload the filePress אפלאוד א פייל. MP3, M4A, WAV, OGG, an MP4 video and most other audio files work. Where the browser supports it, a large file is shrunk on your computer first so it uploads faster.
- Wait for the textA progress bar shows the upload, then the transcription. Keep the page open — a long shiur takes several minutes.
- Use the textCopy it into Word or Google Docs, press הערט עס פארגעליינט to hear it back, or פאררעכט גראמאטיק to clean up the spelling.
Several hours long? Put the file on Google Drive or Dropbox, set it to "Anyone with the link", and email the link to transcribe@heimishvurt.com. The text comes back by email, so you can close the computer.
What to expect
- A draft to read over. You get plain text you can correct, not a finished, edited document.
- The recording matters most. A recorder close to the speaker gives far better text than a phone at the back of the room. Background noise, several people speaking at once, or music make it harder.
- Check names and quotes. It was trained to write common loshn-koydesh words in their usual spelling, but names and longer quotes from pesukim, Gemara or seforim are where to look most carefully.
- One language per file. If the shiur is mostly in English or Hebrew, choose that language before uploading.
- Not there yet: speaker names, timestamps, Word export, and pasting a YouTube / Kol Halashon / WhatsApp link on the website.
What it costs
Free for 30 days with no limit. Then $4 a month or $30 a year — for as many recordings as you like, plus everything else on the site. For comparison, the published rates we found for human Yiddish transcription ranged from about $1 to $5 per audio minute (October 2026). For a transcript that must be perfect, such as a sefer going to print, a human editor should still read it over.
What happens to your recording
- It is transcribed by Heimish Geredt's own speech-recognition system — on our own servers, or on a rented cloud GPU (RunPod) when ours are busy. It is not sent to Google, Microsoft or any AI chat service to be transcribed.
- Large uploaded files are stored under a random, unlisted address so they can be processed. They are not deleted automatically yet — email message@heimishgeredt.com and we will remove them.
- For quality checks, the system keeps a log of the most recent 300 transcriptions (all users together), including their text. Only our administrator can see it, and older entries are overwritten automatically.
- The website keeps diagnostic recordings of page sessions for up to 30 days, which can include text shown on the page and copies of audio you upload.
- No ads, and we don't sell personal information.
